Nokia announces the N1 Android tablet, will launch in China in early 2015

In 2013, Nokia sold off a major section of itself to Microsoft, waving goodbye to its Devices & Services division. Turns out you don’t need that particular area to still release a device running services, though.

On Tuesday, November 18, Nokia officially unveiled the N1 Android-based tablet. The device bears a unibody Aluminum construction, it runs Google’s newest version of Android, 5.0 Lollipop, and it bears Nokia’s proprietary software, the Z Launcher, as its entry point for the user. Nokia is also licensing its name, design and Z Launcher to Foxconn (a major supply partner to Apple). As a result, Foxconn will manufacture and sell the new tablet.

As far as specifications go, the N1 tablet features a 7.-inch display with a resolution of 2048×1536 resolution (the same size and resolution of the iPad mini 3). Under the hood, there is a 64-bit Atom Z3580 processor, 32GB of built-in storage and 2GB of RAM. On the back, there’s an 8-megapixel camera, and a 5MP front-facing shooter on the other side. On the bottom, near the charging port (which is a microUSB Type C reversible connector), there are stereo speakers. The battery measures in at 5300mAh, while the frame measures in at only 6.9mm-thick.

Nokia is looking to launch the N1 tablet in China at the early part of 2015, and it will cost only $249. Nokia says that other countries will be considered, and that the N1 tablet will launch “in other markets” at some point after the initial launch.
